Between Religion & Mystery

The question of the afterlife, or what comes after death (or life), is one of those that never cease to attract attention.

Of course, the main reason for that is the fact that any kind of a straight answer can not be given. Having that in mind, we won’t aim for one here.

There are really many kinds of afterlife narratives nowadays: from stories like the one of neurosurgeon Eben Alexander who had a near-death experience, which enabled him to enter another state of consciousness…

to people who claim to remember their past lives or even the past of the entire civilization.

Without getting into the explanation or validity of these phenomenons directly, our aim in this lecture is somewhat different:

In order to better understand afterlife stories and to try to take something useful from them, we will present some of the ancient theories about the afterlife that shaped our thought on the subject.

More precisely, we will talk about Egyptian and Greek understanding of the afterlife, and the marvelous spiritual ideas that arise from it.

Although our civilization’s first association to the afterlife may be one of the dominant religions, we will see that paganic understanding of life and that have many things in common, in the first place with Christianity.

These two great civilizations have a lot to offer when it comes to knowledge about life itself, and many things we will say can be related to numerous other lectures here.

As old wisdom goes: “everything is (inter)connected” :)
