Dharana
When one’s mind is bound by a single thing or bound in one place, it is said to be in the state of dharana.
In other words, dharana is a prerequisite to meditation. Concentration is the very beginning of meditation, and meditation is nothing more than the culmination of concentration.
Beginner practitioners are advised to use physical objects on which they will concentrate in order to facilitate the onset of dharana.
Whichever object one decides to concentrate on, he or she should come up with an idea connected with it.
To enter the state of dharana, Yogic science teaches us to utilize the practice of tradak or gazing.
Tradak entails gazing at something without blinking. However, one should strive not to gaze for the purpose of gazing. By doing this, one’s eyes become tired very quickly.
If you put your mind on the idea behind the object, you will be able to gaze at it for much longer.
After a little while, you can try to close your eyes and visualize the given object in your mind.
First, the object is external, but later on, it becomes internalized and your mind takes its form. What you think you become. That is dharana.
Many beginner practitioners think that they are unfit for meditation because their minds are not clear and pure the moment they sit down and close their eyes.
To reap the most benefits from the practice of Yoga, you must be patient and consistent with your practice. Accomplishments only come to those who persevere!
