The Phenomenon
Over the past few months, reality shifting has become a worldwide phenomenon that has been capturing the imagination of hundreds of millions of people.
But, what exactly is reality shifting?
Reality shifting can be described as a form of spiritual practice that allows the practitioner to shift his or her consciousness to a whole new reality.
While many consider reality shifting as nothing more than an escapist social media trend, it is important to point out that many similar practices still play a major role in various cultures across the world.
Lucid dreaming, out-of-body experiences, shamanic journeys, and extrasensory perception, all of these phenomena have a lot in common with reality shifting.
First and foremost, these phenomena challenge our established beliefs and theories about human consciousness. It is apparent that there is more to our consciousness than we had previously thought.
Secondly, people who are engaged in these types of practices reap a ton of benefits from them.
More often than not, experiences of altered consciousness can quickly turn into life-changing epiphanies.

The Methods
Reality shifting is typically conducted via two distinct methods.
The first one is called the “raven method” and it requires the practitioner to lay down on his or her back and assume the starfish position.
You are then supposed to count down from 100 whilst desiring the reality you want to shift to.
The second method is called the “Alice in Wonderland method,” because the practitioner is supposed to visualize himself or herself chasing after a figure from their desired reality, and falling down a rabbit hole with them.
In psychology, these types of experiences are called “transliminal experiences.”
Although the practitioner engages in some sort of meditative practice prior to actually entering another reality, the experience is not dream-like, as the practitioner remains awake and aware throughout the whole process.
Transliminal experiences occur when our minds are tranquil and soothed.
In fact, all of us go through these states on a daily basis as we are about to fall asleep or wake up.
These two transitional states are called hypnagogic (the transitional state between wakefulness and sleep) and hypnopompic (the transitional state between sleep and wakefulness) states.
Although we find ourselves in these states each day, most of the time, we do not use them to our advantage.
Various phenomena of naturally altered consciousness deeply rely on these transliminal states, as does meditation.
Apart from being soothed, when in these states, our minds are protected by an impervious shield of clarity that significantly affects our mindfulness and potential for personal growth.
To learn more about hypnagogic and hypnopompic states, feel free to consult our “The Mindfulness of Dream and Sleep” lesson.

Similar Phenomena
While not being exactly the same, other phenomena such as lucid dreaming, extrasensory perception, out-of-body experiences, and shamanic journeys similarly redefine what we think we know about human consciousness.
Best of all, you can use our app to familiarize yourself with all of these phenomena, as well as practice them via the app’s “Practice” section.

Lucid Dreaming
Lucid dreaming is something most of us will spontaneously experience over the course of our life.
Lucid dreaming is a state in which we are completely conscious and engaged with the dream world we found ourselves in.
With adequate practice, we are even able to control everything that is going to happen in our dreams.
Just like reality shifting uses transliminal states, such as hypnagogic and hypnopompic states, to its advantage, so does lucid dreaming.
The biggest difference between the two lies in the fact that reality shifting does not put you in a dream world, but rather in a different universe.

Out-of-Body Experiences
OBEs or out-of-body experiences have a lot more in common with reality shifting than lucid dreaming.
In a nutshell, OBE is a state of consciousness during which you are separated from your physical body and in which you can think, act, and perceive as you would in your normal state of being.
Researchers have shown that 25% of the US population remembers experiencing at least one OBE during their life.
While many think of OBEs as dream-like states, they are far too vivid and real to be categorized as dream-like experiences.
The most important thing to highlight here is that, just like reality shifting, OBEs can become common experiences with a bit of practice and dedication.

Extrasensory Perception
Extrasensory perception is the ability to perceive the world around you outside of your five senses. It is often called the “sixth sense.”
What makes ESP similar to reality shifting is the fact that the dimensions of time and space do not limit this phenomenon.
The most structured practice of ESP is called Remote Viewing, and over the past few decades, many scientists and institutions (such as the US Army) have devised their Remote Viewing protocols that have proven to be extremely effective.
By putting the time in, you too can master this skill of Remote Viewing.
The “Practice” section of our app contains various exercises that can help you improve your Remote Viewing skills!

Shamanic Journeys
Shamanism is one of the oldest spiritual practices known to man.
For thousands of years, shamans have relied on various techniques to transfer themselves to other worlds in search of answers and healing.
In fact, reality shifting is closely related to what is known as a “shamanic journey.”
Typically, a shaman would listen to a very repetitive drum beat to enter a theta wave-dominated state of consciousness and travel to a whole new reality.
For example, entering the Lower World (located in the Earth) is usually done through a hole in the ground. As you have probably already noticed, this technique is similar to the “Alice in Wonderland method.”
As is the case with all other spiritual practices that we have mentioned here, all of us have the ability to go on a shamanic journey.
If you are interested in embarking on a shamanic journey, once again, our app has you covered. Simply visit the “Practice” section of the app and tap on “Shamanic Journey.”
Do not forget to let us know what your experience was like in the comment section!

Conclusion
Reality shifting, much like lucid dreaming, OBE, shamanic journeys, and ESP, tell us that there is more to human consciousness than we initially thought.
We are capable of experiencing different universes that are equally as real as the one we are living in.
Probably the best metaphor that describes the nature of our consciousness is the TV metaphor.
Essentially, our consciousness has access to many different “channels.” Which one we will be in tune with depends on our thoughts and how much we resonate with a different reality we want to shift to.
